The whole Brett Favre issue continues to thread itself throughout the sports world and leaves NFL fans rooting for Favre, GM Ted Thompson or neither.
Let’s start by saying that no matter what happens, Favre will always be considered one of the best – if not arguably the best – quarterback in NFL history. He’s a class act guy with tons and tons of skill, and it was hard not to cry with him as tears flowed from his face when he announced his retirement. It was such a convincing press conference; I didn’t exactly foresee him wanting to come out of retirement a few months later. Nevertheless, here we are. And it is one big mess.
Favre wants to come back and play for Green Bay. Green Bay says no – and rightfully so because Favre waited a bit too long to say so. He could have mentioned it at the draft. Plus, the Packers have Aaron Rogers who is ready to go. Favre wants a release; the Packers won’t give it to him. I can’t imagine Brett Favre playing for any other team but the Green Bay Packers. He has become a face for their organization and vice versa really. It’d be like Tony the Tiger asking to be released from Frosted Flakes to go represent Fruit Loops.
Bottom line: Favre went about it completely wrong.
When Favre held his retirement press conference, it was a memorable way to go out. People were left remembering his unbelievable career and his last tears of goodbye. Now, all that has changed, and what could have been a great final moment for him is becoming a childish game. He’s starting to look silly. Saying how he doesn’t feel welcome in Green Bay, and how he’s ‘tempted to show up at training camp to call their bluff.’ Well, Brett, what if they’re not bluffing? Then you show up, and you’re out of luck. Wouldn’t look too good would it? Favre says the Packers shouldn’t worry about his legacy because that’s his job. Well it’s already starting to take a hit.
Don’t mess this one up, bud. If all this continues, people will always remember this big fuss. After the remarkable career you’ve had, it just wouldn’t be worth it.
